Last week, MEB Design Chartered Architects joined Cherwell School’s Year 12 ‘World of Work’ Day. The event connects students with employers from across the region, providing them with the chance to explore various career paths. It also offers hands-on experience in different professions, which helps students gain valuable insights.
Associate Architect Maggie Forrester, and Architectural Assistant/Apprentice Abu Hussain, represented MEB Design at the ‘World of Work’ event. They introduced 20 eager students to the world of architecture. Maggie and Abu shared their professional experiences, explaining the essential skills required to succeed in the field. As a result, students gained a deeper understanding of what it takes to become an architect.
The students had the opportunity to choose from four design briefs: a Community Eco Pavilion, a Multi-Use Therapy Hub, a Changing Places Toilet for Cornbury Festival, and a Multi-Chamber Harvest Store. In their groups, students researched, designed, and modelled a concept sketch for their chosen project. Furthermore, they discussed the key features, advantages, and challenges, which encouraged critical thinking and creativity.
We were particularly impressed with the students’ enthusiasm and teamwork throughout the day. Despite the limited time, they produced high-quality work that demonstrated both their dedication and creativity. They showcased their skills by presenting both individually and as part of their groups. Several students were even commended for their outstanding efforts. Additionally, the event was impeccably organized, thanks to the hard work of Charlotte Richer, Head of Sixth Form, and Brooke Wilson, Beyond Cherwell Administrator. Their attention to detail ensured a successful and enjoyable day for both students and employers. We strongly encourage other businesses to participate in similar events, as they offer invaluable opportunities to inspire the next generation of architects, designers, and professionals.
