Adventure Plus – Inspiring Outdoor Bushcraft and Adventure
Adventure Plus is an outdoor bushcraft charity based in Oxfordshire, offering various activities to schools and other groups. Their mission is to provide immersive outdoor education that encourages a love for nature and adventure. Instead of relying on off-site locations, Adventure Plus has created a master plan to expand on-site accommodation and activity facilities.
Master Plan Development
Since 2014, MEB Design has partnered with Adventure Plus to bring their master plan to life. The plan includes a lake, a mound with subterranean caving, and a coasteering wall with zip lines. Additional facilities like accommodation, an activity barn, and high and low ropes courses will enhance the site, offering more opportunities for outdoor exploration.
Phase One – Yurt Village and Cabins
In 2022, Adventure Plus completed the Yurt Village and cabins. These self-catering units are supported by a kitchen and covered dining block, providing a comfortable outdoor experience. This phase marks a step forward in creating a full outdoor adventure environment.
WC and Shower Hub – Accessibility and Sustainability
The most recent development is the WC and Shower Hub, which includes Changing Places standard facilities. This ensures accessibility and inclusivity for all visitors. The hub reflects Adventure Plus’s commitment to sustainability, offering an environmentally conscious facility.
Sustainability at the Core – CLT Construction
For the WC and Shower Hub, MEB Design recommended Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) over concrete and blockwork. CLT offers low embodied carbon, superior energy efficiency, and airtight construction. This decision supports Adventure Plus’s environmental goals and MEB Design’s sustainable design practices.
Looking Ahead – The Next Phase
The next phase will focus on the lake, with earth excavation to create the mound and caving system. Adventure Plus remains committed to providing sustainable outdoor experiences that promote adventure and environmental responsibility.
The WC and Shower Hub project was a Regional Winner in the LABC Awards 2024, and finalist in the Structural Timber Awards, Offsite Awards, and LABC Grand Finals.
